Is it totally bad etiquette to buy a gift for someone and buy the same thing for yourself too?

Let's say you buy a friend a shirt that you really like too. Is it wrong to buy the same style of shirt for yourself even if it's in a different color? Or if you buy them a brand of make-up that works well for you and you buy two gift baskets... one for the friend and one for yourself. Is it considered rude, fine, or indifferent?

not at all. just because you like the same gift doesn't mean anything. it just means you both have simular tastes. women always buy things for there friends and get one to as they like it. especially if its a good deal. guys do it all the time. you buy your buddy a drill at home depot on sale and get one also. he thanks you and you say it was a great deal so i got one also. they appreciate the thought, not whether you got one also.
Reply:It might be considered unoriginal, but not offensive.

Unless you stipulate that you both have to wear the same shirt together always. Now that's plain rude.
Reply:I don't think that it is wrong.
Reply:Of course not!! thats why products are made massively.
Reply:You are sacrificing some part of yourself (your time and money) thinking of someone to give a gift to. That's all that really matters, or at least should matter.
Reply:I don't think so I do it all the time I think it's perfectly fine
Reply:No it is not considered bad. They should actually consider it as a compliment. If you like the item enough to buy for yourself, then you must really like it and it's to be taken as a compliment.
Reply:No, go for it. It shows that you really liked what you bought someone else.
Reply:It depends realli. Cos I gave my friend a purse for her birthdae and bought one for me too in a different colour. She was using hers for two weeks until that day I told her I bought the same one even thought I wasn't using it. She stopped using the purse ever since. Not sure i offend her or something but u just gotta be careful
Reply:I think it's really nice that you would buy your friend a gift that you like so much, you'd like to have one too. I would think it was really thoughtful if my friend did that.
Reply:I don't think so!
Reply:naw.. its coo
Reply:i dont think so either
Reply:I think it is flattering and affirms that you think as much of them as you do yourself!
Reply:far from being rude. It would be rude if you asked to use part of the gift or borrow the gift so if it is something you want as well yeah go ahead and get yourself one too
Reply:i would think it's fine.

it shows it's something you would want for yourself also, meaning it isn't crappy, cheap, etc.
Reply:music companies prefer that you do it that way

they feel your stealing if you dont
Reply:no not really
Reply:no..i think it will show that the gift isnt cheap..and u really liked it...so be cool
Reply:It is not bad form at all to buy something for yourself what you have bought for a friend. I buy a book for a friend. If it is useful for me, I buy a copy for myself too. The same with T-shirts, food, roller pens. When your friend sees you using the same pen you have given her, it shows your endorsement for the thing and that your gift was well-meant for intended good use.
Reply:There's no rule of ettiquette that says this is wrong.
Reply:It's ok! I'm doing the same thing.
Reply:I would have no problem with it. In fact, it would tell me that you thought it was a great gift since it was worthy of you. Just keep being generous with others, and the love for yourself is earned. Peace.
Reply:Its fine, nothing wrong in that
