Celebrities and gift baskets?

Did you know that every presenter at the Oscars received a gift basket worth $70,000. They don't need that. They should be happy just to be there. What do you think about celebrities recieving these gift baskets? Are they taxed on them?

Celebrities and gift baskets?
its ridiculous. yeah lets give millionaires a bunch of stuff they don't need...and if they did need it, they have enough money to pay for it themselves. I hate that celebs get everything for free when they are the ones that have the money to buy stuff. Meanwhile there are homeless people with nothing. And military that make crap for salary but they are fighting for their country. They should make the millions. Send them the $70,000 gift baskets.
Reply:I thought they said this year there would be no gift baskets, due to IRS clamping down on the unpaid taxes. It's not like these people can't afford the taxes.

At the same time, it's bizzare that someone who makes 10 million a movie gets a hundred thousand dollar gift basket. It just seems ridiculous. It's like laughing at people who really need money.
Reply:know they are just getting rewarded for that great achievment

but yes, that is way over board....did they put a car in each basket???
Reply:In a way, they were receiving the basket as payment for their services. Think about it. The presenters probably earn millions of dollars on a production, for a few months work.

$70K seems about right for a few minutes work on worldwide television.
Reply:They have enough money and material things. They should donate that money to the poor and homeless.
Reply:OH, cut it out! They all worked hard to get there, that is their job, and maybe one of the few they had this year, some of them. You know nothing about the industry and I do. There are lots of gaps where you're earning nothing, seasons where you're rolling in the dough but with a lot of little paranas yapping behind you trying to think up excuses as to why you should give them a slice of the pie YOU baked and which they did little or nothing to help bake. If you are jealous, do what they did, go down that path and get your own 70,000 dollar gift basket! Stop whining.
Reply:I think it is a great idea to give a celebrity a gift bag. If one of your products get spotted on them it could become the next big thing and receive even more press. Yes, they are taxed on them -- nothing is free!

Reply:I really think they should`t get anything

they are not taxed on them
Reply:I totally agree with the .tamara_cy... But I think they should auction them off for charity.
Reply:I think it's just like anyone giving out party favors at their party but the richer they are the more they can afford to give out.......the IRS requires you claim gifts over a certain amount so they probably were taxed on them........everyone always seems to talk about how people should spend their money and what people do and don't need but the fact of the matter is unless it's your money you shouldn't be telling people how they should or should not spend it and maybe someone didn't need something but they got it anyway (how many purses do you have compared to how many you need?)...also if you know anything about marketing this is a great idea for companies if a celebrity is seen using their product then that's free advertising for them and it might convince fans of the celebrity to use their product....
