Celebrities and gift baskets?
Did you know that every presenter at the Oscars received a gift basket worth $70,000. They don't need that. They should be happy just to be there. What do you think about celebrities recieving these gift baskets? Are they taxed on them?

its ridiculous. yeah lets give millionaires a bunch of stuff they don't need...and if they did need it, they have enough money to pay for it themselves. I hate that celebs get everything for free when they are the ones that have the money to buy stuff. Meanwhile there are homeless people with nothing. And military that make crap for salary but they are fighting for their country. They should make the millions. Send them the $70,000 gift baskets.

At the same time, it's bizzare that someone who makes 10 million a movie gets a hundred thousand dollar gift basket. It just seems ridiculous. It's like laughing at people who really need money.

Started a gift basket business but they are not selling, what are we doing wrong?
In March, my family started a gift basket business. We operate out of home and have website. We attended a major trade show as a vendor and only sold three or four baskets. We sent literature to real estate agents, funeral homes, and the list of potential customers from the trade show. We have also gotten creative and put together cute inexpensive favors for the ladies at the Race for the Cure marathon. We have donated a few baskets for some charity events. We still havnet seen profit. We have also just joined a craft store for the holidays through the end of December in hopes to get ourselves out there. We have only sold 18 dollars so far and its been almost a month. Other vendors at the store sell like crazy and they are selling crafts as well. Is it just that people are not likely to buy a gift basket unless its for a special occassion? Our baskets are priced way under competitors. I know we havent put out any expensive ads, could that be it? Hopefully someone can help.

First it was the Industrial age
Then it was automobiles
Then recently the information age
Right now the fastest growing indrusty is "Wellness".
So let's see...how could we morph that into the gift basket industry? You got it! Make your gift baskets "wellness" gift baskets and I bet you that works. As you know there are millions of gift baskets out there. Why not have a niche on the market?
You could have healthy things in there. I know there is healthy chocolate and snacks for sure. Also by having a WELLNESS gift basket you don't have to put just food in there. You could even have any product that has to do with wellness.
If you are in this business to make money then what I would suggest is find a consumable business. Gift baskets are not consumable. So what happens is when a person buys your basket you are done with the sell and you are done earning income.
However a consumable business is better. When folks run out they reorder and you get paid again and again without having to sell again and again. Makes sense wouldn't you say?
So find a co. with an extremely high reorder rate. If you are doing gift baskets for fun and not really wanting to earn income that's one thing but you seem ambitous and wanting to earn income. Find something Consumable where you keep getting paid.
I know..I know...the moment is coming where we say what we do but it's true. My wife and I are still being compensated for work we did 3 years ago. We are in a consumable business with no selling and no making baskets.
If you can do what you are doing..you would find our business much easier. Bring no money but bring your time to our conference at

Reply:I think it is just the economy. people do not buy extras when they are struggling to pay for necessities. maybe the competition's customers are from an established customer base. It takes a little time to establish ones self. Don't give up hope.
Reply:Just a thought - sometimes if something is priced TOO cheap, people don't want to buy it because - it's too cheap! I'm not in business, but have a feeling if the product is priced correctly (higher) it might sell better. I'm thinking in terms of being a customer and sometimes if things are priced as if to look expensive, I might be more inclined to buy it because I think it's must be a good product. If it's cheap, I might have second thoughts. Sounds funny, but you could try that with some of your products and put the price up and see what happens!

Are you making bskets that are food and other products ? These gift basket can be anything and you can appeal to anyone simply by hitting what it is they love.
Do you have baskets for local health clubs ? Things that will appeal to the work out crowds such as soaps, candles, fitness music, barbells, sweat towels, sugar free candies, health foods(huge variety), personal hygene products such as specialty deoderants, colognes, etc...
Do you have baskets that appeal to the chocoholics !? Self explanitory.
Do you have baskets that appeal to MEN!? A basket of tools, grease rags, a tire gauge, w-d40 spray, oil can, hanging bracets for the garage, tool box, even a how to book. You can ask your customer what theme. It could be a fishing OR hunting basket for the sportman.
Do you have all sizes of baskets so even a student could afford a small one for a special teacher? One that would have an apple in it, stickers, markers, a special teacher pin or plaque, etc...
Do you hit the local hospitals and nursing homes ? Explain that your baskets can be made to order for every individual simply by asking a few questions about the person receiving the basket. Have one of your big baskets on display at the hospitals for people to view with some explaining that custom baskets are made to order.
Visit your schools teachers lounge, hospital reception area, nursing home, factory lunch rooms, dentist office, mega mart managers, banking institutes of all kinds, fitness centers, chiropractor office, all the churches, insurance offices, car dealerships. Hit up all the break rooms and lunch rooms of all the business you can possibly think of.
You can have the local churches put an announcement of your business in their bulletin. YOU need to get out there and be super social. This would not be a business for an introvert!!
Give out super small baskets as samples and offer a slight discount for the first order and possibly delivery discount if you deliver.
Advertising in the newspaper is not the answer !! Like I said word of mouth is the greatest !

I have to ask this, so that you can ask yourself...Is it possible you need to change the appearance of the basket, or perhaps the product composition?
Most purchases of this sort are inspired by the feeling one gets when they see the product. For example, if you have a range of products that are all different colors that just look "scattered" (to be polite), your sales will be far less than if you have products that have for example black labels, appear to be premium products, and is all put together in a fashion that "drips" with sophistication.
That's just one thing to take a look at if all other things have been considered.

What should I put in them? I don't want to spend a lot of money like I did last year on one specific gift for each member of my family. Where do I buy cheap baskets. Should I just buy cheap nice stuff from the dollar store and put it in each basket

The dollor store acutally has some cute little baskets cheap. They have stuff you can make a bath basket or a kitchen basket. A baby basket, pet stuff. Last yr I even found some cute slippers and sweats for toddles. You can make some nice baskets from the dollor store.

Celebrities and gift baskets?
Who thinks celebrities get way to much for free? Like those gift baskets they recieve for just showing up at an event. They are usually worth over $10,000. A law just passed that they need to be taxed on those gift baskets. Do you agree with that? I don't think they should get them at all. They have enough money to buy their own. Maybe baskets like that should be auctioned off for charities? What do you think?

If you are near wineries, see if you can get a few tasting certificates for them. I'd even consider doing some really high end pasta sauce and a artisan pasta - most gourmet shops and some wine shops will carry this type of thing.

You insert the point into the cork and press a button releasing the gas inside the bottle forcing the cork out. I gave this to my mom and she liked so much she started giving them away as gifts to her friends.

I am thinking about making a themed gift basket for my mom for her birthday and the only two ideas I have came up with are a pamper yourself basket or a movie night basket. They do great and affordable hand made paintings from your favorite photograph. What I liked of them is that they at reeeeaally good at capturing the physical likeness. I was very impressed with the results. In addition to portrait paintings they also do paintings of pets, landscapes and anything that means something to you (like your first car, favorite vacation spot, etc). They’re the nicest people… because I was late with her gift they even hand made a custom card to notify my mother that a special gift was coming her way. I highly recommend them.

What would be good items..Most of them will not be staying in the columbus area after the wedding.
The reception will be over by four pm so they're going to stay the night before after the rehearsal dinner and we'll have to be up EARLY.
I was thinking mugs with cocoa or coffee (but not everyone drinks coffee)

When we stayed overnight last summer for my good friend's wedding, they sent gift baskets to everyone's hotel room....which I thought was a terrific idea! In them, they included bottled water for both, peanuts, granola bars, trail mix and gum (which we used the morning after....the mint gum helped ease our tummies for all the drinking we did the night before at the reception).
For your baskets, the hot cocoa packets and coffee packets sound great....everyone likes either one or the other. If they are getting up early, you might want to include something you might take on-the-go for breakfast....breakfast bars or granola bars.

Reply:I would get a gift card to a movie rental place like blockbuster that would pay for a couple of movie rentals. Then add in a couple kinds of candy you know he likes .....like junior mints or snow caps or something like that, and get the box sizes like they sell at the movies. You have to include some popcorn, and a bottle of soda for the two fo you to share. Then you can add some napkins to the basket, and a candle that you can light when the two of you are watching the movie.

What kind of food should I put in a gift basket, for movie night?
Happy Anniversary! You didn't say how old you two are, but I suspect that you're still in your teens. So what do teens like?
Salt, sugar, and fat! Here are some ideas:
1. Chips and salsa or dip
2. Popcorn that you pop in the microwave
3. Beef Jerkey, or if you have the dough, buy some salami and
cheese
4. Candy: Reeses' cups, sourpatch kids, hershey bars, laffytaffy
Dots, Malted Milk Balls, Raisinettes (you can often
get 2 for the price of one)
5. Your favorite soft drink or sparkling cider
6. A gift book you make yourself with coupons he can redeem
when he wants, such as "Good for one free kiss" or "Good for
one free back rub". Use your imagination and have fun!
7. Have someone take a couple of polaroids of you and buy an
inexpensive frame for them. They make a nice addition!

Reply:This is a really good idea, but making baskets can end up being a little pricey...include popcorn (microwave), twizzlers, milk duds, etc...
Reply:I would get a gift card to a movie rental place like blockbuster that would pay for a couple of movie rentals. Then add in a couple kinds of candy you know he likes .....like junior mints or snow caps or something like that, and get the box sizes like they sell at the movies. You have to include some popcorn, and a bottle of soda for the two fo you to share. Then you can add some napkins to the basket, and a candle that you can light when the two of you are watching the movie.

just put any food that you would get at a movie. they even sell toppings for your popcorn in different flavors, like nacho cheese and a bunch of others. then you sprinkle it on top. thats at this store called "le gourmet chef". it might be at your local mall, its at some around me. also, instead of a plain, boring basket, put it in a container that looks like a popcorn container, just made out of hard plastics instead. make his card look like movie tickets.

Reply:My boyfriend's mom makes us a "movie date night basket" every year for Christmas. She gets a couple of DVDs that she knows we would like ( this year it was both the Pirates of the Caribbean...) to that she adds a couple of bags of popcorn, mini coffee bags ( we both love coffee), a can of mixed nuts, pringles, chex party mix, a couple of jumbo candy bars, some of the movie candy they sell at Wal-Mart like the junior mints, sugar babies, etc.....It's the best gift we get every year!!

Reply:Popcorn definetly, skittles, junior mints, sour patch kids, anything that you can buy at the theater. Make sure you have some soda or water to wash down that popcorn, maybe put a few movies that you two like in there, you may even want to put in pj's, slippers and a blanket for cuddling.
Reply:bags of microwave popcorn or just pop some up yourself and put in a bag, hot tamales, junior mints, a 2 liter of pop or a couple smaller bottles, napkins :) , some DVD's from the WalMart 4.99 bin , they have some great titles.
You can actually go nuts making these baskets, the possibilities are endless. Just remember buy the time you buy a lot of this stuff you could have bought a video game! :)

How can someone know if there getting the right gift basket for the person?

Make it yourself. If you are giving a fruit basket....You should know a little about the person you are giving it to.
I have a few Vegetarian friends so on B-Days, I give them a vegetable and fruit basket with what ever is seasonal at the time.
Like right now I made a few baskets with DRY vegetable soup packets, sweet taters, squash, oranges, dried fruits, a few nuts, apples...etc... Just be creative.
YOU can buy BULK items and make several baskets compared to buying just 1 basket. The cost is way beyond what it would take to MAKE it yourself. and I love personal gifts even if it is a knitted scarf. But I am sentimental.
If the person likes meat...then make a dry meat basket with dry salami, jerky, crackers, cheese etc...
If they like bath oils...go to a Walmart or Dollar store and get a few gift baskets and then go home and take them apart. A make a few baskets with bathoils and fruits..

Help with easter gift baskets?
I need ideas of what to get for my boyfriend's 8 year old brother, I already have my boyfriend's 12 year old sister,things for her in her gift basket. the only ideas I have for the boy is a soccer ball, cards, water guns and small cars, and candy with eggs in them, and home baked cookies , that I'm going to make.Any ideas. About 20 dollers, I'm trying to make them fair for each of them.

Reply:You could get him a variety of those little rubber wristbands that come in every color and with a variety of slogans. I've seen them camoflauge colored, and sayings that are anything from inspirational to spiritual to fun. Lots of little boys at my school wear them and think they are pretty cool! This could be the "boy" version of little makeup and jewelry items for his sister.
Reply:Last year I made Easter baskets for my pastor and his family, Sunday School teacher and my boss's kids. I put plastic eggs w/candy in them, jelly beans, etc and made homemade muffins, and homemade chocolate crosses. Good luck.

I just picked up cartoon DVDs and child appropriate old movies for cheap.

Reply:Go to the Dollar Tree or a similar store, just browse up and down the aisles, it is so easy to get ideas that way. Also, WalMart has a cheap section with lots of small toys and stuff. They still like matchbox cars at that age. If he likes little action figures, there are tons of them out there, a cheap calculator, etc...
My son loves to get cool school/stationary supplies in Easter Baskets, Christmas Stockings, etc... Like mechanical pencils, specialty pens, small dry erase board with markers, small bulletin board with designer/specialty tacks, sports team folder, etc...
Reply:That is really nice of you. REALLY nice. Maybe you can add a little stuffed animal or a 5 dollar mcdonalds gift card. Also, bouncy balls or pop rock candy. Go to the toy section in walmart and you can find little toys for 1 dollar. Oh yes.. one other cool thing you can add that they sell at walmart are glow in the dark bracelets. The kind you see at disneyland. good luck
Reply:When my son was that age, I got him comic books, sidewalk chalk, play-dough, colored pencils, simple models, etc. For easter in particular, the chalk, pencils and play-dough. He made his own decorated easter eggs out of the play-dough. At first I thought he was too old for it, but truth is he loved it. (Particularly hiding a fake snake made out of play-dough in my basket).
